![]() ![]() Like most DAWs I’ve used, Mixbus has a few different screens to work from, mainly the editor view representing our multitrack, and the mixer view, representing the console. It even supports sync for video and can lock up with other systems. All aspects of music making can be accomplished inside Mixbus this includes recording, mixing, sequencing, using MIDI tracks and virtual instruments, etc. At present, Mixbus can only be purchased as a download from Harrison's website. While Mixbus may have analog dreams, it is still very much a full-fledged DAW in terms of its feature set. Only two files are supplied: an installer and an authorisation file. Linux users will need to source JACK separately, while OS X users will find it in the installer bundle. JACK must be installed first, as it provides the backbone for the DAW, and launching Mixbus will start it up. In OS X, Mixbus will scan and recognise AU and LADSPA plug-ins on the system. Linux users can also use LV2 plugs instead of the OS X-only AU. Working with MixbusĪs first time users of Mixbus, we found the software fairly familiar to use. Mixbus could be operated with a two-button mouse (a standard Apple Mighty Mouse just won't do - right- clicking is the only way to access essential pop-down menus), but a three-button mouse with scrollwheel is highly recommended. There are only two main windows - an Editor and a Mixer. The Editor features the channel strip for the currently selected track on the left and timeline, markers, transport and editing options at the top of the screen. "It's hard not to like Mixbus - Harrison has done a great job with it - its few quirks are easily forgiven."Īudio tracks follow a conventional horizontal arrangement, and automation data of all controls and plug-ins is either superimposed or displayed as additional streams beneath each waveform. Transport and editing options are all laid out at the top of the page. we happily discovered that the Editor window can be expanded to full-screen without any framing, menu bars and transport controls, thus reclaiming an extra 15-20% of space for editing-intensive sessions. ![]() A collapsible sidebar deals with region management, tracks show/ hide and edit groups. Creating tracks sequentially defaults to the available physical inputs on the system. Before starting, best to check that the system isn't recording at 32-bit floating point if you need PCM audio, as this is the factory default.Įach channel supports direct outputs, all configurable using JACK. This effectively turns Mixbus into a multi-track recorder if the system has sufficient I/O. Track channels can be set in tape mode, making recording destructive when overlapping. There are playlists and layer management, and key- commands can be customised for those like ourselves who are happy with the same set for all DAWs. One slightly confusing issue is with track grouping - the Editor and the Mixer run separate groups, and they cannot be copied across.Īlso, playlists can be named but the name doesn't translate to the audio files, which will still bear the track name. Only renaming the channel strip will affect the file name. The Mixer is just like a real console - it has embedded EQ, dynamics and sends. It is apparent that the idea is to give the user an instant knob-per-function approach. The Mixer comes pre-loaded with one master fader and eight mix busses. Each of these boasts an analogue-style VU-meter, which indicates the amount of tape saturation introduced by the adjacent control knob, and is a definite vibe-setter. Mono or stereo mixer channels and additional busses are user-definable and can be added without restriction to their number except for the available CPU power - our old Intel laptop managed to play 100 mono channels at 44.1KHz 24-bit with the CPU peaking around 95%, showing a very efficient use of the available resources.Įach channel features a three-band semi-parametric EQ with a high-pass filter. This is a very musical EQ - the Q narrows with the gain increase - modelled on Harrison's heritage analogue consoles. Mix buss channels and the master fader have a three-band stereo EQ with fixed frequencies, shelving low and high and bell midrange, which we found excellent for adding general colour.Įach of the eight mix busses has a corresponding post-fader send knob on every channel, which can be used for effect sends or for sub-mixing. Curiously, the mix busses and the master fader do not scroll in the Mixer window, although mix busses can be hidden or shrunk. The remaining portion of the screen is available for scrolling through the user-definable tracks and busses. Each channel, mix buss and master have a simple but very effective dynamics section, which can be set as a compressor, leveller or limiter. The built-in compressor and limiter are extremely good despite their simplicity, and are comparable to those found on real analogue consoles. ![]() Here, we share our passion for Cannabis with our customers and patients. SIMON: McKenzie Kimball, director of Fruita, Colo.'s, Mike the Headless Chicken Festival. And it's something that would make our community proud and just give them a space to enjoy each other's company. It's not any particular emphasis on one thing. And secondly, they just wanted the community to have something fun and silly that would bring everyone together. KIMBALL: The person who started the festival - I actually know her quite well and was talking to her about, you know, what was it about this story that made you all want to start a festival, you know? And she said, first of all, it was so exciting to celebrate somebody - something's will to live. And maybe this is the whole inspiration of the festival. SIMON: You know, I find myself getting misty-eyed thinking about Mike. This year - we're really excited - we're adding a history tent that talks about Mike himself, the festival, a myth-busting board and a bunch of information about what the festival came to be. So we have the little marshmallow Peeps as well as chicken wings. KIMBALL: We've had a lot of different iterations, but the current festival - its kind of main feature is a Peep- and wing-eating contest. What do you folks do with the Headless Mike festival? And he really behaved like a pretty normal chicken because of all that was left behind, even without the head. Lloyd talks about in interviews that he would still try to kind of, like, preen and peck. He actually was pretty normally functioning. And there were actually some scientists that took a look at him and basically discovered that the base of the brainstem was still intact, which is kind of - for people and animals - basic functions. KIMBALL: So they actually took him to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. SIMON: How did he manage to survive and live for 18 months? And so they decided to make a festival, and it kind of reincarnated the story of Mike. And it happened to be that one of the recreation directors was a part of the Rotary Club as well and thought that it might be an interesting thing to bring the community together and celebrate this chicken's will to live and celebrate a little bit of quirky Fruita history. And in the late '90s, a local Rotarian brought it up at one of their meetings in relation to history of the town. It wasn't a popular story in the '70s, '80s. And for a long time, it wasn't really, like, common knowledge in the city of Fruita. KIMBALL: It's pretty exciting, actually, because the story, like you said, happened back in 1945. Who wouldn't want to see a headless chicken? When I asked the question, why did he captivate so many people, I think I know. Kimball, thanks very much for being with us. And festival director McKenzie Kimball joins us. Today, Mike's hometown of Fruita, Colo., holds an annual festival in his honor. Over 600 people lined up a day to get a glimpse of headless Mike. And Lloyd Olsen took their show on the road. ![]() His head was gone, but vital organs, including brain function, remained. But Mike escaped being an entree by surviving. The word "grenade" was also used during the events surrounding the Glorious Revolution in 1688, where cricket ball-sized (8.81 to 9 in (224 to 229 mm) in circumference) iron spheres packed with gunpowder and fitted with slow-burning wicks were first used against the Jacobites in the battles of Killiecrankie and Glen Shiel. In 1643, it is possible that "Grenados" were thrown amongst the Welsh at Holt Bridge during the English Civil War. By the mid-17th century, infantry known as Grenadiers began to emerge in the armies of Europe, who specialized in shock and close quarters combat, mostly with the usage of grenades and fierce melee combat. The grenades were most likely intentionally dumped in the moat of the bastion prior to 1723. Many of the grenades retained their original black powder loads and igniters. A hoard of several hundred ceramic hand grenades was discovered during construction in front of a bastion of the Bavarian city of Ingolstadt, Germany dated to the 17th century. The first cast-iron bombshells and grenades appeared in Europe in 1467, where their initial role was with the besieging and defense of castles and fortifications. In a 12th-century work, Mujmalut Tawarikh, based on an Arabic work which is itself based on original Sanskrit work, a terracotta elephant filled with explosives set with a fuse was placed hidden in the van and exploded as the invading army approached near. Grenade-like devices were also known in ancient India. If ten of these shells are fired successfully into the enemy camp, the whole place will be set ablaze. They are sent flying towards the enemy camp from an eruptor ( mu pào), and when they get there a sound like a thunder-clap is heard, and flashes of light appear. Inside they contain half a pound of 'divine fire' ( shén huǒ, gunpowder). ![]() The shells ( pào) are made of cast iron, as large as a bowl and shaped like a ball. History Įarliest known representation of a gun (a fire lance) and a grenade (upper right), Dunhuang, 10th century AD Its first use in English dates from the 1590s. The word grenade is likely derived from the French word spelled exactly the same, meaning pomegranate, as the bomb is reminiscent of the many-seeded fruit in size and shape. A friction igniter inside the handle or on the top of the grenade head was used to initiate the fuse. The stick design provides leverage for throwing longer distances, but at the cost of additional weight and length, and has been considered obsolete by western countries since the Second World War and Cold War periods. Some grenades are mounted at the end of a handle and known as "stick grenades". Grenades are often spherical, cylindrical, ovoid or truncated ovoid in shape, and of a size that fits the hand of an average-sized adult. Most anti-personnel (AP) grenades are designed to detonate either after a time delay or on impact. In modern grenades, a pre-formed fragmentation matrix inside the grenade is commonly used, which may be spherical, cuboid, wire or notched wire. Their outer casings, generally made of a hard synthetic material or steel, are designed to rupture and fragment on detonation, sending out numerous fragments ( shards and splinters) as fast-flying projectiles. ![]() Fragmentation grenades ("frags") are probably the most common in modern armies, and when the word grenade is used in everyday speech, it is generally assumed to refer to a fragmentation grenade. Grenades work by dispersing fragments ( fragmentation grenades), shockwaves ( high-explosive, anti-tank and stun grenades), chemical aerosols ( smoke and gas grenades) or fire ( incendiary grenades). The user removes the safety pin before throwing, and once the grenade leaves the hand the safety lever gets released, allowing the striker to trigger a primer that ignites a fuze (sometimes called the delay element), which burns down to the detonator and explodes the main charge. A modern hand grenade generally consists of an explosive charge ("filler"), a detonator mechanism, an internal striker to trigger the detonator, and a safety lever secured by a cotter pin. Demonstration of a German stielhandgranate (shaft hand grenade), a high explosive grenade with time fuze, Netherlands, 1946Ī grenade is an explosive weapon typically thrown by hand (also called hand grenade), but can also refer to a shell (explosive projectile) shot from the muzzle of a rifle (as a rifle grenade) or a grenade launcher. ![]() This mechanic makes you really focus on what is being presented to you.
